The Utilities Department is responsible for the operation of both the city's water treatment and distribution system and the city's wastewater collection and treatment system. In addition, the city operates a sanitation service.

The utilities director coordinates the activities of the city with the department's employees. The utilities director is also responsible for ensuring both utilities are properly permitted and comply with regulations specified by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency.
