Community Connection
December 29, 2007

Next summer, the City of Parsons population will grow by nearly 500 people for a week. During that week, a non-profit group known as Group Workcamps will come to Parsons and help rehabilitate more than 60 homes. The event is co-sponsored by Westside Christian Church and the City of Parsons.

Group Workcamps Foundation is a proven program that pairs hundreds of teenagers and adult sponsors with communities like ours. Over the course of one week, the campers will interact with the community of Parsons by repairing homes for elderly, low-income, and disabled residents.

At an average Workcamp, roughly 400 volunteers dedicate over 12,000 hours, or approximately $65,000 worth of work.

According to the website www.groupworkcamps.com, a variety of rehab projects will take place throughout one week. The Work Camps do the following types of projects: porch and step repair, wheelchair ramp construction and repair, interior and exterior painting, weatherization, light carpentry and sizing repair.
