The Parsons Fire Department will begin installing smoke detectors in two different portions of the city beginning in September. A donation of $500.00 from the Parsons Community Foundation has made this year's smoke detector installations possible. Since 1997 the fire department has installed over 1000 smoke detectors throughout the city. Each year smoke detector installations are made possible by donations or through the fire department budget. The goal of the fire department is to eventually walk every neighborhood throughout the city offering smoke detectors or batteries. Smoke detectors or replacement batteries are available year round by contacting the fire department at 421-7050. The fire department urges all residents to check their detector monthly, and to replace batteries when the time changes.

The Parsons Fire Department was recently awarded two grants to enhance their services. The first grant was the Federal Fire Act Grant to purchase computers, software, and printers to conduct fire inspections in the field. The safety grant will also cover the expenses for each of the 19 firefighters, and building inspector to attend a nationally certified course called Inspector I. The total grant was $27,365. The second grant was awarded from the Regional Homeland Security Council in the amount of $83,000. This grant will allow the department to purchase a truck and trailer to carry equipment, and trained personnel to major events such as structural collapses, high angle rescues, and trench collapses. The fire department is part of a regional rescue team made up of nine different departments throughout Southeast Kansas.

The Labette County Safe Kids Coalition is sponsoring a bike safety rodeo on September 29th from 8:30-12:30 at the Middle School parking lot. Each participant will be receiving a bike helmet, t-shirt, and free lunch. There will also be free prizes given away. Registration was due by September 14. For more information call the fire department at 421-7050.
