Twelve-Hour Shifts

Beginning September 1, the police officers went to a twelve-hour shift. Officers were divided into four squads with four officers each. There then will be a Sergeant on duty each day along with an administrative Sergeant during the day. This allows the department to maximize the number of officers available to the public. It also gives the officers more days off each month. The officers may rotate shifts in the future.

Citizens' Academy

July 12, 2007 started the first Parsons Police Citizen's Academy. The classes were every Thursday for five weeks, the last week being a certificate ceremony. The academy was designed to allow citizens to have a better understanding of what an officer's job entitles them to do. The participants got to meet a variety of Law Enforcement Officers from the police department as well as from the KBI and the Labette County Sheriff's Department. The participants also participated in the police departments ride along program as well as class lecture and participation.

The police department is planning a second academy in the spring of next year, probably late May. The academy will be stretched to an eight week program. It will be open to twelve qualified participants. Please watch for an application announcement in the Parsons Sun, the city website (www.parsonsks.com), the city newsletter, and the Government Access, Cable One, Channel 5.
