Community Connection
September 18, 2007

Parsons Public Library will host a variety of activities this fall for every taste and every age.  For adults, the library will present a three-part book discussion series entitled "Community: The Way We Live", sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council.  The first discussion, scheduled for September 24, will feature Fanny Flagg's Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, about a community of offbeat women joining together to make something inclusive, enduring, and satisfying.  Readers will also enjoy hearing about The Milagro Beanfield War, by John Nichols, on October 22.  This story, set in New Mexico, is about a community of quirky characters who are at odds with each other, but who learn to compromise.  Bailey's Café, by Gloria Naylor, ends the series on November 19.  All three discussions are scheduled to start at 6:30 pm.  The library will also host two movie nights related to the first two books on September 18, and October 16, at 7:00 pm.

On October 15, at 7:00 pm, two Oswego residents, Bret Raines and Mary Taylor, will introduce library patrons to the world of mollusks.  Bret and Mary have been avid shell collectors for over twenty years, and have installed an exhibit of shells in the library which will be in place through the end of October.  Bret is a Research Associate with the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and has published many scientific papers and a book on mollusks.  Mary has been key to the discovery of several new species and has provided illustrations for publications.  In addition to the short program, there will be an opportunity to examine exotic specimens up close and learn about their habits and habitats.

Also for adults, the library will once again this year host a Hitchcock Movie Night on October 26, at 7:00 pm.

For children, Story Hour continues to be a popular activity, and is scheduled each Wednesday at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, and the last Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm.  The November 21st Story Hour will feature a special Thanksgiving story, for the enjoyment of local children, as well as any children visiting from out-of-town for the holiday.  Another special treat for juveniles will be the Holiday Crafts Day, on December 21, from 10:00-4:00.  Attendees will be guided in making small items that they can give as holiday gifts.

For the young adult, Teen Read Week is October 14-20.  Teens are encouraged to read books from a recommended list, and vote online for their favorite book.  A Teen Movie Night associated with Read Week is scheduled for Saturday, October 20, time to be announced.

Finally, the always popular annual Holiday Tasting Party will return this year.  This event is scheduled for December 12, 11:00-2:00, and open to all ages.  For more information on any of these events, please contact Parsons Public Library, 311 S. 17th Street, Parsons KS 67357, phone the library at 421-5920, or email to parsonslibrary@hotmail.com.
