2008 MUSIC IN THE PARK SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
Music lovers are invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to the new Forest Park Amphitheater for the 2008 Music in the Park concert series. This year's series is guaranteed to provide a variety of music styles from Bach to the Beatles and everything in-between. The City of Parsons is once again proud to sponsor the Music in the Park series each Thursday evening starting May 29 and running through the end of July.
This year will mark the debut of the new Forest Park Amphitheater, located in the northwest corner of Forest Park near the intersection of 13th and Broadway. The amphitheater will serve as the permanent host venue for the series, which in previous years was held at a variety of temporary locations out of necessity.
As always, the Music in the Park series will feature several performances by the Community Band, which is comprised of local musicians under the direction of Robert Walker. In addition, the Community Orchestra, under the direction of Scott Nelson will kick-off the series with the May 29th concert.
This year, a special bonus concert will be held at the end of the series. On July 31st, the Beatles tribute band Liverpool will perform their stunning recreation of the Fab Four's music. Liverpool has performed internationally, and has received praise as being one of the best and most accurate groups to impersonate the original band. They are also one of the few groups that perform not only the band's early music, but on through the entire career of the Beatles, including their "psychedelic" period.
Other musical groups scheduled to perform include Steel Around, billed as a Tropical Rock Band; Mariachi Tulsa, a five-piece Mexican band; Euphonic Fever, comprised of musicians who met while they were students enrolled in the Commercial Music Program at LCC; the Sky Smeed Band featuring Chanute-native Sky Smeed performing Americana, an alternative country-style of music; and Queen's Gambit, a traditional Celtic group that dresses in Renaissance-period costumes.
So mark your calendars, the 2008 Music in the Park series begins on Thursday, May 29, and runs until July 31. All concerts are held on Thursday evening, with the exception of the July 4th performance of the Community Band.
All concerts start at 7:30 p.m. Concessions, provided by local vendors will be available in the park each evening starting at 6:30 p.m.
In case of severe weather conditions, the concerts will be moved to the Parsons Municipal Auditorium, 112 S. 17th, with the exception of the July 4th concert, which will be canceled. For more information you can call (620) 421-7032 or log onto www.parsonsks.com.
